Class Notes

One major difference Teddy Roosevelt brought to government was in the management of labor. In the past one of the few things the federal government did was help put down strikes by using the army to break up strikers. TR did not go all out to help the strikers, but now he used the army to keep peace between the two sides. Without the army’s help, owners lost a major advantage and now were forced to compromise with labor. This was first seen in the Anthracite Strike, where management was now forced to give shorter hours and better pay in order to keep the mines open.
