In order to keep pace with the Spanish, the English would eventually want their own colonies in the New World, as well.  Their first attempt was made by the explorer, and sometimes pirate, Sir Walter Raleigh in Roanoke.  He sent over a large group with the idea of finding gold like the Spanish, but try as they might, they were not successful.  With all their time dedicated to wealth they forgot to plant crops, but instead expected the Natives to take care of their needs.  When an expected supply ship from England did not arrive, they became worried and when the pirate Sir Francis Drake stopped by, they all hitched a ride with him back to England.  Raleigh did not want to give up on the colony so he would try a second time, but this group would do even worse.
