One of my favorite aspects of the Christmas season is how the spirit of Christ makes people just a little bit kinder. People look out for the welfare of their fellow man just that much more.
Finding ways to give back is not hard this time of the year as there are angel trees and The Salvation Army Red Kettles at most store entrances. Yet this year if you are looking at giving something different, have you ever thought of giving a goat? Well, if you have, there is now a way to give gifts such as livestock or similar gifts through a vending machine known as a Giving Machine.
In 2016, The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat ter-day Saints launched its Light the World campaign, encouraging people to follow the example of Jesus by performing daily acts of service throughout the Christmas such as posting a review of a favorite local business or calling an old friend. Participants were invited to share their experiences online using the hashtag #LightTheWorld to help spread Christmas joy.
The following year, the Church expanded the effort by introducing the first Giving Machines. Located initially in Utah, these machines allowed families to purchase items such as eyeglasses, water bottles, and yes, even goats, for people in need around the world. Working with local and global charities, the Church ensures these donated items reach families facing the greatest need.
Starting in 2018, both the Giving Machines and the Light the World campaign went national, and soon after, global. In 2023, Light the World lit up Times Square in New York City with billboards celebrating the birth of Christ, accompanied by the unveiling of three Giving Machines. By 2024, 104 cities hosted Giving Machines, which together have raised nearly $50 million since the program began.
This year, Oklahomans will have the opportunity to join in as Giving Machines are available at Bricktown in Oklahoma City, and in Grapevine, Texas. The Church covers all operational costs, allowing 100% of every donation to go directly to charity. This is a fun, meaningful way for families to give back during the Christmas season and a wonderful opportunity to help light the world.
